The Morning Misfire: A Collection
SM in collaboration with Andy Cao
October 5, 2021 – October 8, 2021
Left to Right: Panel 1: Initiation (SM), Panel 2: Response (Cao), Panel 3: Addendum (Cao)
The first panel’s utilization of persistent exclamation points and capitalization emphasize SM’s morning consternation with which they respond to the limitations of the closed door. The addition of the apostrophe in “RIGHT’S” suggests a debilitating and fervent fury during the production of Panel 1. Cao’s use of blue marker continues the thematic legacy left by SM, offering a peek into the new world of the door art movement. However, Cao’s failure to encapsulate the tone and voice of SM’s first panel (such as his use of printer paper instead of lined paper) leaves his artwork ultimately inferior to SM’s original work of Panel 1. The door’s present openness suggests new beginnings and reconciliation in a world of constant uncertainty in an unbounding period of time.
